Micah 6

Previous Chapter | Next Chapter

"Hear now what the LORD says: Arise, plead your case before the mountains, and let the hills hear your voice.

Hear the LORD's controversy, O mountains, and you strong foundations of the earth for the LORD has a controversy with his people, and he will contend with Israel.

O my people, what have I done to you? How have I wearied you? Testify against me.

For I brought you up out of the land of Egypt and redeemed you out of the house of slavery, and I sent Moses, Aaron, and Miriam before you.

O my people, remember now what Balak king of Moab counseled and what Balaam the son of Beor answered him; and remember from Shittim to Gilgal, so that you may know the righteousness of the LORD.

With what shall I come before the LORD and bow myself before the high God? Shall I come before him with burnt offerings, with year old calves?

Will the LORD be pleased with thousands of rams or with ten thousands of rivers of oil? Shall I give my firstborn for my transgression, the fruit of my body for the sin of my soul?

He has shown you, O man, what is good. And what does the LORD require of you, but to do justly, and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God?

The LORD's voice cries to the city, and the man of wisdom shall fear your name: 'heed the rod and him who has appointed it.'

Are there not still treasures gained from wickedness in the house of the wicked, and the scant [unfair] measure that is abominable?

Shall I count those pure, who have wicked scales and a bag of deceitful weights?

For the city's rich men are full of violence; and her inhabitants have spoken lies and their tongue is deceitful in their mouth.

Therefore I have made you sick by striking you, making you desolate because of your sins.

You shall eat but not be satisfied, and your emptiness shall be in the midst of you; you shall carry some away but shall not deliver them, and that which you do deliver I will give up to the sword.

You shall sow but not reap; you shall tread the olives but not anoint yourself with oil, and crush the grapes but shall not drink the wine.

For you have kept the statutes of Omri and all the works of the house of Ahab, and you walk in their traditions. Therefore I will make you a desolation and your inhabitants a derision, you shall bear the reproach due my people."
