|Nahum 1 |
The prophecy concerning Nineveh. The book of the vision of Nahum the Elkoshite.
The LORD is a jealous and avenging God; the LORD avenges and is full of wrath; the LORD will take vengeance on his adversaries and reserves wrath for his enemies.
The LORD is slow to anger and great in power and will not at all acquit the wicked. The way of the LORD is in the whirlwind and in the storm, and the clouds are the dust of his feet.
He rebukes the sea and makes it dry, and dries up all the rivers. Bashan and Carmel wither, and the flower of Lebanon fades.
The mountains quake before him and the hills melt. The earth trembles at his presence, yes, the world and all who dwell in it.
Who can stand before his indignation? And who can abide in the fierceness of his anger? His fury is poured out like fire, and the rocks are thrown down by him.
The LORD is good, a stronghold in the day of trouble; he knows those who trust in him.
But with an overrunning flood he will make an end of Nineveh, and shall pursue his enemies into darkness.
What do you plot against the LORD? He will bring it to an end; affliction shall not rise up a second time.
For they are like bundles of [dry] thorns, and while they are drunken like drunkards they shall be devoured like dry stubble.
There is one who has gone out from you who plots evil against the LORD, a wicked counselor.
Thus says the LORD: "Though they are at full strength and likewise many, yet they will be cut down and pass away. Though I have afflicted you, O Judah, I will afflict you no more.
For now will I break their yoke from your neck and will break your bonds apart."
The LORD has given a commandment concerning you, Nineveh: "No more of your name shall be born. I will cut off the graven image and the molten image out of the house of your gods; I will make [them] your tomb, for you are vile.
Behold upon the mountains the feet of him who brings good tidings, who publishes peace! O Judah, keep your solemn feasts; fulfill your vows. For the wicked shall no longer pass through you; he is utterly cut off."
