|Numbers 20:8-12 |
8 Take the rod, and gather the assembly together; then you, and Aaron your brother, speak to the rock before their eyes; and it shall give forth his water, and you shall bring forth to them water out of the rock.1 So you shall give the congregation and their beasts drink."
9 And Moses took the rod from before the LORD, as he commanded him.
10 And Moses and Aaron gathered the congregation together before the rock, and he said to them, "Hear now, you rebels; must we bring you water out of this rock?"
11 And Moses lifted up his hand, and with his rod he struck the rock twice; and the water came out abundantly, and the congregation drank along with their beasts.
12 And the LORD spoke to Moses and Aaron, "Because you did not believe me enough to show me as holy in the eyes of the children of Israel,2 therefore you shall not bring this congregation into the land which I have given them."
2 Because you (Moses and Aaron) did not believe me enough to show me as holy in the eyes of the children of Israel, neiher Moses or Aaron were allowed to go into the promise land. What was it that they did wrong? The Lord (Jesus) told Moses to speak to the rock. Moses apparently did three things wrong: 1) he expressed anger at the people, calling them rebels, 2) he implied that they, (Moses and Aaron), would bring water from the rock, and 3) he not only spoke to the rock, but melodramatically struck the rock twice with his staff, as he had struck the rock under God's instruction's to bring water from the rock at Horeb.
