|Psalms 35 |
Contend, O LORD, with those who contend with me; fight against those who fight against me.
Take hold of shield and armor, stand up and come to my aid.
Draw out the spear and javelin and stop those who persecute me. Say to my soul, "I am your salvation."
Let those who seek my life be confounded and put to shame; let those who devise my hurt be turned back and brought to confusion.
Let them be like chaff before the wind, with the angel of the LORD driving them away;
Let their way be dark and slippery, with the angel of the LORD pursuing them.
For they hid their net for me without cause, and without cause they dug a pit for my soul.
Let destruction come upon them unaware; let their net, which they hid for me, catch them; let them fall into that very destruction.
Then my soul shall be joyful in the LORD; it shall rejoice in his salvation.
All my bones shall say, "LORD, who is like to you, who delivers the poor from those who are too strong for him, yes, the poor and the needy from those who plunder him?"
Malicious witnesses rise up; they ask me things that I do not know.
They reward me evil for good to the sorrow of my soul.
But as for me, when they were sick, I wore sackcloth; I humbled my soul with fasting, and when my prayer returned unanswered,
I grieved as though they had been my friend or brother; I bowed down my head heavily, as one who mourns for his mother.
But they rejoiced in my adversity and gathered themselves together; yes, the attackers whom I did not know gathered themselves together against me; they reviled me without ceasing.
Like ungodly mockers at feasts, they gnashed their teeth at me.
Lord, how long will you look on? Rescue my soul from their destructions, my dear life from the lions.1
I will give you thanks in the great assembly; I will praise you among many people.
Do not let those who are my enemies without reason gloat over me; neither let those who hate me without cause wink their eye maliciously.
For they do not speak peace, but they devise deceitful matters against those who are quiet in the land.
Yes, they open their mouth wide against me, and say, "Aha, aha, our eyes have seen it."
You have seen this, O LORD; do not keep silence! O Lord, do not be far from me!
Arouse yourself and awake to my justice, even to my cause, my God and my Lord.
Vindicate me, O LORD my God, according to your righteousness; and do not let them rejoice over me.
Do not let them say in their hearts, "Ah, this is just what we wanted!" do not let them say, "We have swallowed him up."
Let those who rejoice at my hurt be put to shame and brought to confusion. Let those who magnify themselves against me be clothed with shame and dishonor.
Let those who favor my righteous cause shout for joy, and be glad. Yes, let them say continually, "Let the LORD be magnified, who takes pleasure in the well being of his servant!"
My tongue shall speak of your righteousness, and of your praise all the day long.

David was King; no one could be slandering him and plotting to take his life, unless they were not men of the earth; but rather his enemies are supernatural enemies — demons who afflict him; demons whom God uses to discipline and scourge all sons whom he accepts as sons, Heb 12:6. Notice David likens the demons to be lions, as Peter did so advise: "Be sober and vigilant, because your adversary, the devil, walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour. 1 Peter 5:8. David was sorely afflicted because he took another man's wife and had then ordered her husband to be killed; David, the light of Israel, who had enjoyed the fellowship of the Lord in the heavens, lost his perfection and was turned over to the demons for punishment.
