|Songs 1 |
[This is considered by most to be an allegorical song of a Shulamite maiden, representing Israel or the followers (bride) of Christ, sung to the beloved shepherd, God or Christ]. This is the Song of Songs, which is Solomon's.
This is the Song of Songs, which is Solomon's.
Let him kiss me with the kisses of his mouth! For your love is better than wine.
The savor of your good ointments fragrant; your name is as perfume poured forth. Therefore the maidens love you.
Draw me, and we will run after you. The king has brought me into his chambers. We will be glad and rejoice in you, we will remember your love more than wine. The upright love you.
I am black, but comely, O you daughters of Jerusalem, as the tents of Kedar, as the curtains of Solomon.
Do not look not upon me, because I am swarthy, because the sun has darkened me. My mother's children [stepbrothers] were angry with me. They made me the keeper of their vineyards; but I have not kept my own vineyard.
Tell me, O you whom my soul loves, where do you feed, where do you make your flock to rest at noon; for why should I be as one who strays aside with the flocks of your companions?
If you do not know, O you fairest among women, follow the footsteps of the flock, and feed your kids beside the shepherds' tents.
I have compared you, O my love, to a company of horses in Pharaoh's chariots.
Your cheeks are comely with rows of jewels, your neck with chains of gold.
We will make you borders of gold with studs of silver.
While the king sits at his table, my perfume sends forth its smell.
My well-beloved is like a bag or myrrh that rests on my bosom all night long.
My beloved is to me as a cluster of henna blossoms from the vineyards of Engedi.
Behold, you are fair, my love; behold, you are fair; you have doves' eyes.
Behold, you are fair, my beloved, yes, pleasant; also our couch and garden is green.
The beams of our house are cedar, and our rafters are fir.
