Zechariah 7

Previous Chapter | Next Chapter

And it came to pass in the fourth year of king Darius, that the word of the LORD came to Zechariah in the fourth day of the ninth month, [Chislev corresponding to 30 days within our Nov/Dec].

When the people had sent Sherezer and Regemmelech with their men to the house of God to pray before the LORD,

And to speak to the priests, who were in the house of the LORD of hosts, and the prophets, asking, "Should I weep in the fifth month, separating myself as I have done these many years?"

Then the word of the LORD of hosts came to me, saying:

"Speak to all the people of the land and to the priests, saying, 'When you fasted and mourned in the fifth and seventh month during those seventy years of exile, did you really fast for me?

And when you ate and when you drank, did not you eat for yourselves and drink for yourselves?

Should you not have obeyed the words that the LORD cried through the former prophets when Jerusalem and her cities around her were inhabited and in prosperity, when men inhabited the south and the lowlands?'"

Then the word of the LORD came to Zechariah, saying:

"Thus says the LORD of hosts: Execute true justice and every man show mercy and compassion to his brother.

And do not oppress the widow or the fatherless, the stranger or the poor; and let none of you imagine evil against his brother in your heart.

But they refused to listen and turned away a stubborn shoulder and stopped their ears, so that they might not hear.

Yes, they made their hearts like a hard stone, lest they should hear the law and the words which the LORD of hosts had sent by his spirit through the former prophets. Therefore great wrath came from the LORD of hosts.

So it came to pass that just as I called, and they would not hear; so they called, and I would not hear, says the LORD of hosts.

But I scattered them with a whirlwind among all the nations, which they had not known. Thus the land was desolate behind them, so that no man passed through or returned, for they made the pleasant land desolate."
