Zechariah 9

Previous Chapter | Next Chapter

1 This prophecy of the word of the LORD is against the land of Hadrach, and will rest upon Damascus, for the eye of the LORD is on all mankind, as well as on the tribes of Israel,

2 And upon Hamath also, which borders on it; and Tyre and Sidon, though they are very wise.

3 "For Tyre built herself a fortress, and heaped up silver like dust, and fine gold like the mire of the streets.

4 Behold, the LORD will cast her out and destroy her power on the sea, and she will be devoured by fire.

5 Ashkelon shall see it, and fear. Gaza also shall see it and be very sorrowful. For her expectation Ekron shall be put to shame. The king shall perish from Gaza, and Ashkelon shall not be inhabited.

6 A mixed race shall dwell in Ashdod, and I will end the pride of the Philistines.

7 And I will take away his abominations from between his teeth and the blood [eaten with the idol sacrifices] out of his mouth. But he who remains, even he shall be for our God, and shall be leaders in Judah; and Ekron will be like the Jebusites.

8 Then I will encamp around my house like an army, so that no one shall march back and forth, and no oppressor shall overrun them any more, for now my eyes are on them.

9 Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion! Shout, O daughter of Jerusalem! Behold, your King comes to you, he is righteous and having salvation, meek and riding upon an ass, upon a colt, the foal of an ass.

10 I will cut off the war chariot from Ephraim and the war horse from Jerusalem, and the battle bow shall be cut off; and he shall speak peace to the heathen, and his dominion shall be from sea to sea, and from the river even to the ends of the earth.1

11 As for you also, because of the blood of your covenant, I will sent forth your prisoners out of the pit in which is no water.

12 Return to the stronghold, you prisoners of hope; even today do I declare that I will restore double to you.

13 For I have bent Judah for me as my bow, and filled the bow with Ephraim, and I will raise up your sons, O Zion, against your sons, O Greece, and make Israel like the sword of a mighty man."

14 And the LORD will be seen over them and his arrow will go forth like the lightning, and the LORD God will blow the trumpet and will go with whirlwinds of the south.

15 The LORD of hosts will defend them; and they shall devour and subdue the sling stones, and they shall drink and make a noise as through with wine and they shall be filled like sacrificial bowls and like the corners of the altar.

16 And the LORD their God will save them on that day as the flock of his people, for they shall be like the jewels of a crown, lifted up like a shining banner upon his land.

17 For how great is his goodness and how great is his beauty! Grain shall make the young men thrive and new wine the maids.

1 he shall speak peace to the heathen, and his dominion shall be from sea to sea, and from the river even to the ends of the earth. Jesus Christ will speak peace in his ministry of light to the Gentiles, and when he shall destroy the sinners out of the land. Isa 13:9, (as explained in Revelation), leaving only his purified Saints, in whom he rules their thoughts, words, and deeds. Jesus Christ's dominion will then stretch across the whole earth. Jesus, not physically present on the earth, rules it through his army of saints, by his Spirit, in his body with their feet on the earth. Isaiah has also said that Israel will be enlarged to cover the whole earth: You have expanded the nation, O LORD; you have expanded the nation. You are glorified; you have enlarged it far to all the ends of the earth. Isa 26:15.
