|Zephaniah 1 |
1 The word of the LORD which came to Zephaniah the son of Cushi, the son of Gedaliah, the son of Amariah, the son of Hizkiah, in the days of Josiah the son of Amon, king of Judah:
2 "I will utterly consume all things from the face of the land," says the LORD.
3 "I will consume man and beast; I will consume the birds of the heavens and the fish of the sea. I will consume the stumbling blocks [idols] with the wicked, and I will cut off man from the face of the earth," says the LORD.
4 "I will also stretch out my hand upon Judah and upon all the inhabitants of Jerusalem, and I will cut off the remnant of Baal from this place and the name of the pagan and idolatrous priests,
5 And those who worship the host of heaven upon the housetops, and those who claim to worship and swear by the LORD, but who also swear by Molech.
6 Those who have turned back from the LORD and those who have not sought the LORD nor inquired for him.
7 Be silent in the presence of the Lord GOD,1 for the day of the LORD is at hand; for the LORD has prepared a sacrifice, he has invited his guests. [When you wait on God, how can you hear if you are talking to Him? He knows everything you want, he knows everything you need before you can ask.]
8 And it shall come to pass on the day of the LORD's sacrifice, that I will punish the princes, the king's children and all who are clothed with strange garments.
9 On the same day I will also punish all those who leap over the threshold, who fill their masters' houses with violence and deceit.
10 "And it shall come to pass on that day, says the LORD, "that there shall be the noise of crying from the fish gate and a wailing from the second quarter and a great crashing from the hills.
11 Wail, you inhabitants of Maktesh, for all the merchant people are cut down; all those who weigh out silver are cut off.
12 And it shall come to pass at that time, that I will search Jerusalem with lamps and punish the men who are complacent and settled like the dregs of wine, who say in their heart, 'The LORD will not do good, nor will he do evil.'
13 Therefore their goods shall become plunder and their houses a desolation. They shall build houses, but not inhabit them; they shall plant vineyards, but not drink their wine.
14 The great day of the LORD is near, it is near and hastens greatly. Even the voice of the day of the LORD! The mighty man shall cry bitterly.
15 That day is a day of wrath, a day of trouble and distress, a day of ruin and desolation, a day of darkness and gloominess, a day of clouds and thick darkness,
16 A day of the trumpet and alarm against the fortified cities and against the high towers.
17 And I will bring distress upon men, so that they shall walk like blind men, because they have sinned against the LORD; and their blood shall be poured out like dust and their flesh like dung.
18 Neither their silver nor their gold shall be able to deliver them in the day of the LORD's wrath. But the whole earth shall be devoured by the fire of his jealousy, for he will make a sudden end of all those who dwell on the earth."
1 Until we are cleansed enough for God's Spirit to control our words and thoughts, even our prayers are an abomination to God. So be silent before the Lord. Listen and watch in silence; wait for the Lord to speak. Don't babble on thinking to be heard with many words. The Lord knows your thoughts before you can form words to express them. Be still and know that I am God. Psa 46:10. The thoughts of the wicked are shamefully vile and exceedingly offensive to the Lord, but the words of the pure are pleasing words to Him. Pro 15:26. Do not be rash with your mouth, and let not your heart be hasty to utter a word before God. For God is in heaven, and you are on earth; therefore let your words be few. For a dream comes with much business and painful effort, and a fool's voice with many words. Ecc 5:2-3. Be silent, oh all flesh before the Lord. Zech 2:13.
Be not rash with your mouth, and let not your heart be hasty to utter a word before God.
For God is in heaven, and you are on earth; therefore let your words be few.
For a dream comes with much business and painful effort, and a fool's voice with many words. Ecc 5:2-3.
