Hebrews 12:5-8

Display Chapter and Footnotes

5 And you have forgotten the exhortation that speaks to you as to children, "My son, do not despise the chastening [correction and discipline] of the Lord, nor weaken when you are disciplined [reproved and/or tested in trials] by him.

6 For the Lord disciplines the one he loves, and scourges every son whom he accepts."4 [The pain of a wound cleanses away evil, so do stripes purge the inward parts [including the heart] of man, Pro 20:30.]

7 Endure your trials; God deals with you as with sons, for what son is there whom the father does not discipline? [We are fallen men, slaves to sin, who must must be cleansed of sin through the inward cross of self-denial, which includes trials with suffering to be rid of sin. Your faith is tested through trials: is it strong enough to last through trials with suffering, or do you become offended and cease seeking God as your first priority?]

8 But if you are without chastisement [correction and discipline], of which all [true sons of God] must share, then you are illegitimate,5 and not sons. [He who has suffered in the flesh has finished with sin. So that you should not live the rest of your time in the flesh in the lusts of men, but [live according] to the will of God. 1 Pet 4:1-2.]
