|John 12:46,36 |
36 While you have light, believe in [depend on, trust and obey] the light, that you may become the children of light." Jesus spoke these things and then departed to hide himself from them.4 [For "God is light." 1 John 1:5, and "the Father of Lights." James 1:17. The Light (Christ) is given to every man who comes into the world, John 1:9, so that through the Light, all men might believe, John 1:7; and by abiding in the Light and obeying the Light, receive salvation to become a child of the light, a son of God. To believe in the light is to believe what it shows you by revelation as true and then to keep and obey its teachings; this is to believe in Jesus because Jesus is that light. If you do not keep or obey the words you hear Christ speak to you, those words will be your judge when you die. John 12:47-48.]
46 I have come as a light into the world [every man], so that whoever believes [depends on, trusts, obeys] in me should not abide in darkness.6 [The Light (Christ) is given to every man who comes into the world, John 1:9, so that through the Light, all men might believe, John 1:7; and by abiding in the Light and obeying the Light, receive salvation to become a child of the light, a son of God, living and walking in the light instead of darkness : giving thanks to the Father, who has made us fit to be partakers of the inheritance of the saints in the light. Col 1:12. ]
6 I have come as a light into the world [every man], so that whoever believes [depends on, trusts, obeys] in me should not abide in darkness.
I have come as a light into the world [every man].
The Greek for this verse shows that what has been universally translated as "the world" kosmos <2889> could just as well have been translated as: the inhabitants of the earth, or men, or the human family. John 1:4 says, "In him was life; and the life was the light of men;" and John 1:9 says, "Which is the true Light that enlightens every man who comes into the world;" which light was given to men so that they might believe. John 1:7. Believe what?—the truth. What truth?— believe the truth of what the light shows them about the evil of their ways and the truth of how God's and Jesus' righteousness is vastly different than their own ways; and then to believe the promises of God, making them the hope of their life's efforts to attain salvation.
so that whoever believes [depends on, trusts, obeys] in me.
To "believe in me" is to believe Him, to believe what He says to you, and act on it. Every man is given a small measure of light so that he might believe what it shows him, what it reproves him, what it convicts him — while a man is alive on the earth. Christ, the light in every man, anonymously pleads with every man in his life to depart from his evil, selfish ways; but men in general do not comprehend that this gentle pleading comes from God, and so they ignore the light. John 1:1-5. And this is the condemnation, that light has come into the world [every man], but men loved darkness rather than light because their deeds were evil. For everyone who does evil deeds [sins] hates the light [so hates Christ, who is the light] and does not come to the light for fear his deeds will be exposed and reproved. John 3:19-20. But he who practices truth comes to the light, so that his deeds may be shown to have been produced [formed and powered] through God. John 3:21. If a man persistently seeks to receive the teachings of God and believes what the Son, (light), within him is pleading, he will become a child of God, a child of the light; and he will receive the eternal life of God, which is the full measure of Christ himself, the life of God.
From the Word of the Lord within:
"Jesus did not die so you can continue to sin. I would just as soon have avoided that horrible death. I did it to show you the extent of obedience required for your own salvation. You must have a devotion to the law that is on every man's heart; you must listen; and you must obey. He told us it was not enough to believe in God, we must believe what He says to be true. It is not enough to believe in Jesus; we must believe what He says and then act on it."
should not abide in darkness.
To abide in darkness is to be without the light of God to guide your thoughts, words, and deeds. All men who walk by their own mind and imagination are walking in darkness, stumbling (sinning) because they don't see what they should be doing as guided by God. We are all walking in the night, waiting for the day to break in our hearts, when the morning star (Jesus Christ) rises in our hearts to guide and lead us; then we are walking in the light. Until then we are blind; and to have our sight restored, we must wait for, watch, listen, believe what we hear Him say, and obey Him.
