2 Her priests teach for hire. And they say, "Is not the LORD among us? No evil can come upon us." Therefore Jerusalem shall become a heap of ruins. This is exactly the state of Christendom today. All the ministers and priests are paid a salary; they teach for hire. They are in the steps of those who were destroyed by the Lord. And those who support such covetous preachers will also suffer the condemnation of the Lord. If they are covetous, they are not true preachers of the Lord; they are ministers of Satan, transformed to look like ministers of righteousness; and they don't know they are Satan's ministers; they think they are Christ's, even though Christ never called them, never trained them, never perfected them, never authorized them, and never gifted them with the ministry.

Peter's said: Feed the flock of God that is among you, serving as an overseer, not by constraint, but willingly; not for filthy lucre [money], but readily. 1 Peter 5:2
Jesus said: I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep. The hired hand is not the shepherd who owns the sheep. So when he sees the wolf coming, he abandons the sheep and runs away. Then the wolf attacks the flock and scatters it. The man runs away because he is a hired hand and cares nothing for the sheep. John 10:11-13. Freely you have received, freely give. Matt 10:8
Paul said: For we are not like so many, who peddle the word of God [for profit]; but with sincerity, as being from God, we speak in the sight of God in Christ. 2 Cor 2:17. What is my reward then? Truly, that when I preach the gospel, I may offer the gospel of Christ without charge. 1 Cor 9:18.

Preaching for a salary is the error of Balaam, which is spiritual adultery, loving wages and profit — both Peter and Jude had some very grave things to say about those who solicit donations or preach for a salary. Woe to them! For they have gone in the way of Cain, have run greedily in the error of Balaam for profit, and perished in the rebellion of Korah. They have a heart trained in covetous practices, and are accursed children — for whom is reserved the blackness of darkness.
